How to take the public bus from/to Keflavic Airport - Reykjavic

Keflavic airport (KEF) it's not near Reykjavic (50 km). Even if you book a flight to Reykjavic it's highly probable that you'll arrive to KEF.
There're three companies that run regular services between KEF and city center.
Even if you book in advance you're going to pay USD 25/30 each way. (+plus 5/10 if you ask for a direct transfer to your hotel).

If you want to save some bucks I'll explain here how to use the public bus to get/from Keflavic International Airport:

Public Bus from KEF to Reykjavic:
Just a few steps outside the main airport entrance is the bus stop for the bus number 55.
That's the one you need to get to BSI bus station in central Reykjavic.
Take in mind that you can wait the bus for up to 1/2 hours. In Iceland they take the timetable really seriously so you can rely in the bus schedule. (LINK to Bus Schedule)
The ticket costs ISK 1700 (nearly the half as the transfer) and it only takes around 20/30 more minutes than the direct service.

Beware of the service if you arrive on a weekend day! (saturday/sunday).
If you use the service on saturday/sunday you'll need to change bus in Fjordur bus station. You get down there and take the number 1 bus in the same stop.
You don't need to buy another ticket. Just show to the driver the ticket you bought in the 55 bus. The number 1 bus will take you to BSI station (the number 1 Bus get's even to Hlemmur station, which is in the very centric part of the city)

Public Bus from Reykjavic to Keflavic airport:
From Reykjavic center to Keflavic Airport you just have to take the same public bus: the number 55.
There's a small bus stop just in front of the BSI bus station. It has a red roof and it has a sign. If you don't find it just ask to the staff inside the bus station.

Important note:
Take in mind that the service frecuency is low (schedule is not the same in week days and during weekends!). You can always rely on the Grey Line airport transfer just across the public bus station as a "Plan B".
You can trust the public bus timetable. Pay attencion to the pick up time in BSI and the time of arrival at the airport to know if the public bus is an option for you.
HERE is a link to the Bus 55 schedule from Reykjavic to the airport.
